Getting to Nazaré

Nazaré sits on Portugal’s Silver Coast, about 1.5 hours north of Lisbon. Here are your options.

From Lisbon by car

The quickest and most flexible option: roughly 1.5 hours up the A8 motorway. Tolls apply and are collected electronically (Via Verde), so ask your rental company for a transponder. Cars can be picked up at Lisbon airport.

By bus

Rede Expressos runs direct coaches from Lisbon (Sete Rios) to Nazaré in about 1 hour 50, several times a day. It’s the cheapest reliable way and drops you near the seafront.

By train

There is no station in Nazaré itself; trains reach Valado dos Frades / Famalicão da Nazaré about 8 km away, from where a short bus or taxi finishes the trip. It’s slower (3 hours or more) — for most people the bus is the better choice.

From Porto

About 2 hours by car, or 2.5–4 hours by coach depending on the connection.

Getting around

Nazaré is small and walkable. The historic funicular links the beach to the clifftop district of Sítio, from where you reach the lighthouse and the big-wave viewpoints over Praia do Norte.

Prices and timetables change seasonally — check the operators before you travel.
